What to Expect in Madinah as a Tourist

Madinah is one of the most special cities in the world for Muslims. It is full of places that remind us of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions. If you are visiting Madinah, here are some important places to see.

Masjid An Nabawi

This is the heart of Madinah and one of the largest mosques in the world. It can hold over a million worshippers. Some of the most special things inside and around the mosque include:

Zamzam water: Always free and available inside the mosque

The grave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: You can walk through and see his grave along with that of Abu Bakr and Umar

Daily lessons: Scholars teach lessons every day that are open to all and free to attend

Masjid Quba

This mosque is loved by visitors and has a great reward connected to it. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever purifies himself in his house, then comes to the Quba Mosque and offers one prayer therein, will have a reward like that for Umrah.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 1412)

Masjid Qiblatain

This is the mosque where the direction of prayer was changed. At first Muslims prayed toward Jerusalem, and then Allah commanded the Qiblah to be changed to the Kaaba in Makkah.

Mount Uhud

Mount Uhud is where the famous Battle of Uhud took place. When you visit, you can see the battleground, the graveyard of the martyrs, and even the mountain where the Prophet ﷺ placed the archers. Many visitors also like to climb the mountain if they get the chance.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Madinah is more than tourism. It is a chance to learn the history of Islam and remember the struggles and history of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions.
