When was “Labor Day” first celebrated?

On September 5, 1882, the Central Workers Union accepted the proposal and organized a picnic in New York City, and unofficially declared this day to celebrate workers. It was in 1884 when the first Monday of September was selected to celebrate the so-called Labor Day.

Labor Day in the United States

The first Monday of September of every year, the day honoring and recognizing the efforts of workers is celebrated in the United States. The origin of this national holiday has two possible drivers: Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Workers and Matthew Maguire, a machinist who was a native of Paterson, New Jersey. This day is also known as Labor Day.
