In 1971 the US Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” to commemorate the adoption in 1920 of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women in the United States the right to vote. Each year, a Presidential Proclamation recognizes the hard work and perseverance of those who have helped ensure the right of women to vote.
