To pay tribute to the struggle of the slaves for their freedom, in 1997 UNESCO proclaimed August 23 as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This year, in his message alluding to date, the Director General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura, said that “this day represents an opportunity to institutionalize remembrance, to prevent this crime against humanity to be forgotten or ignored, and bring to mind the memory of a tragedy that was by far hidden or unrecognized, so that this memory is put into the appropriate place in the human conscience”.
