The history of “Qi Xi” or Double Seventh

Long ago, there was a very honest and good man named Niu Lang (the cowherd). His parents died when he was only a child. Later, his brother’s wife kicked him out of home and had to make a living raising animals and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Zhi Nu (the girl saluting), fell in love with him, so he came secretly to earth and married him. They lived a happy life and had a son and a daughter. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven discovered what had happened and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring back the maid. With the help of celestial cattle, the pastor flew to heaven with her son and daughter. When he was about to join his wife, the Queen Mother took one of his gold hairpins and created a lightning that separated the couple forever. However, his loyalty build a bridge so they could cross the beam and meet again. Thereafter, the Queen Mother allowed them to meet on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. So the day of their meeting is called “Qi Xi” (Double seventh).
