Although there is no historical evidence of official status as to who actually drew up the first flag, a revered legend gives the honor to Griscom Betsy Ross, a young seamstress who lived in the Arch Street Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One day in June 1776, as the story goes, Betsy was visited by a commission of representatives of the Continental Congress, led by George Washington, and was asked to sew a flag. Betsy drew up the flag and suggested a change; instead of a six-pointed star, she said, a pentagram would be more attractive and easier to do.
